OLD TESTAMENT SURVEY 1

This session is designed to give participants a knowledge of the Old Testament from Genesis through Judges.

Goals

The goals of the Old Testament Survey 1 session are to:

1. Identify and understand the key narratives from Genesis to Judges

2. Understand key themes from Genesis to Judges

3. Understand where we discover Jesus in Genesis to Judges

Prep Work

HEAD

• Watch: Old Testament as a Story, — Dr. Peter Leithart (30 min)

• Read/listen: “A House for My Name”, Preface and Chapters 1-3- Leithart (3 hrs)

• Read/listen: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges (~5 hrs total skim/overview)
  If time is tight, focus on these “desert-island” passages:

  • Genesis: 1–4; 6–9:17; 11:1–10; 12; 15; 17; 20; 21:1–7; 22:1–19; 24; 25:19–34; 27–32; 37; 39–50

  • Exodus: 1–6; 12–14; 16–17; 19–20; 24–28; 32–34

  • Leviticus: 1–8; 10; 14; 16; 18–20; 23; 25

  • Numbers: 1–2; 5–6; 9; 11; 13–14; 21:1–9; 24:20–25; 25; 26:1–4; 27

  • Deuteronomy: 1; 4–6; 11–12; 15; 17:14–20; 18:15–22; 20; 23:1–8; 28–29; 30:11–20; 31; 34

  • Joshua: 1–5; 23–24

  • Judges: 1–2; 3:7–31; 4:1–4; 5; 6:1–10; 8:28–34; 9; 10:3–10; 13–16; 18–21

• Watch: Discovering the Gospel in Every Book of the Bible , Gospel In Life (10 min)

• Exegete: Genesis 12.1-9 using the Abbreviated Exegetical Worksheet (30 min)

• Outline: Genesis 1-3 using the Book Outline Worksheet (30 min)
